Multidimensional Needs of Family Caregivers of Home-Dwelling Older Adults with Dementia: A Qualitative Approach for Integrated Intervention Development

Abstract

The rapid increase in the elderly population in Korea has led to a significant rise in the number of dementia patients. Family caregivers of older adults with dementia often experience physical, psychological, psychosocial, and spiritual health issues. This study aimed to identify intervention needs among family caregivers through focus group interviews, aiming to provide foundational data for developing effective intervention strategies to improve the quality of life for dementia caregivers. Participants were recruited using snowball sampling, and seven individuals who agreed to participate were included in the final analysis. Through focus group interviews, four main themes emerged: (1) necessity of diverse programs realistically accessible to caregivers; (2) need for accurate information to facilitate caregiving services and resource utilization; (3) requirement for psychological and emotional support and social interaction; and (4) demand for effective educational media. By qualitatively exploring the actual experiences and latent needs of family caregivers, this study complements the limitations of previous quantitative research. Based on these findings, it is recommended that intervention programs for family caregivers prioritize accessible and tailored support strategies.
